When a company starts making labels for a line of products to launch a new brand successfully, the way the label interacts with the material that the product is housed in could be a significant factor. Placing labels could potentially become more challenging when you have to work around the visible contents of a packaged item, as well as other specifics.
According to a study recently published in the American Marketing Association’s journals, the way customers get a first look at food within a box, packet or other container could affect their opinion of the item in question. Furthermore, different types of foods are better served by the use of various packaging options, which in turn could open up new ideas for label design and arrangement.
In the study, researchers monitored the amount of snack foods that subjects consumed while distracted, finding that the size and “visual appeal” of the snacks made a measurable difference when it came down to personal preference. Among other things, they mentioned the possible repercussions that focusing on this area could have for food producers in their future endeavors.
“We conjecture that food consumption from transparent packages may be even greater in the real world, in which consumers typically spend many hours watching television (or browsing the web) and eating snacks,” the authors write. “These increases in at-home food consumption directly translate to increased sales.”
It can be hard to come up with food labels that leave enough room for an accurate display of contents, but a color label printer can help manufacturers negotiate this effort.
