This blog has previously discussed the nation’s disagreement over genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and how they will impact nutritional labels on many foods. One organization has decided to take a stand, and has arranged for an “Eat-in” to be held on April 8, outside the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition in Maryland.
According to an Occupy-Monsanto.com press release, farmers and backyard gardeners will bring organically-grown vegetables that will be combined in a huge cooking pot to make a special, GMO-free “Stone Soup.” The term refers to the classic folktale of a town pooling resources to create the magical concoction, with enough for everyone to eat.
“The Food and Drug Administration is not listening to the overwhelming majority of Americans who want honest food labels,” Emilianne Slaydon, founder of GMO Free DC, said in the press release. “We have signed numerous petitions but we’ve received no response. We only want the same food labels citizens of over 40 countries enjoy, so we are going to enjoy some ‘Stone Soup’ to demand this simple democratic right.”
Jim Walsh, New Jersey director for Food and Water Watch, an advocacy group, told the NJ Spotlight that the issue is about giving consumers the information they need to be able to make a fully informed decision when it comes to nutrition.
Officials in the group are also calling for more testing to be done on GMOs. Seth Gladstone, a Food and Water spokesman said that it is no different than current requirements for listing calories and food ingredients.
With more Americans wanting to take control in their personal nutrition, food and drink companies must ensure they design custom labels that adhere to federal standards and are as detailed as possible. Using a Primera LX900 color label printer can help organizations in creating unique labels that are still providing detailed nutritional facts.
