Buying locally-made products from businesses that are owned and operated by workers that live in the region has grown in popular demand over the past few years. But, not many cities have done it quite as well as Asheville, North Carolina has been able to.
Franzi Charen is the leader of the Asheville Grown Business Alliance (Asheville Grown), which promotes local commerce. While the “buy local” movement may have grown nationwide in the past decade or so, very few towns have been able to create a tangible element that supports the ethos that Charen has developed for Asheville.
The organization has not only created custom signs, stickers and labels for businesses to stick on their windows, pin on their uniforms and print on their products, but they’ve also created a Go Local Card. These discount cards are available for consumers to purchase and open up opportunities to acquire deals from local businesses, according to the Citizen-Times, a local paper.
“For us, as a volunteer campaign, we’ve been concentrating on doing those things well year after year because we decided that was better than expanding into new projects,” Charen told the source. “But if we raise enough money from sales of the Go Local card, we might be able to hire someone to work for the alliance.”
As the consumer sentiment for more locally produced products grows nationwide, companies can tap into this burgeoning market by designing their custom labels to promote this aspect of the business. By investing in a Primera LX900 color label printer, businesses can create high-quality product labels that show its support for the local economy.
