For the true connoisseur, wine temperature makes a difference, and wine labels are one way to ensure wines stay properly cooled in the bottle. One example chronicled in Australian source The Weekly Review shows how the colors on a label in particular can help consumers keep track of the optimal temperature when purchasing and serving.
As the source shows, the sensor is a colorful stripe along the back of the label, with the best range bracketed off toward the right end of the spectrum. They are a means of enforcing wine drinking protocol, since many Australians reportedly don’t drink wine at the proper temperature.
While this could be an issue in many locations, it’s especially important for that country, since Australia gets warmer than the European environments that birthed traditional wine temperature knowledge. Mitchell Taylor, managing director of wine company Taylors, explained this to the AAP.
“The warm Australian climate is not so great for storing and drinking wine,” Taylor said. “It’s an issue that most wine lovers don’t know is having a massive impact on their enjoyment and appreciation of wine.” The same source states that Australian summers can be twice as warm as the temperature recommended originally in Medieval France, which still holds sway as “room temperature.”
Although using color to convey important serving information is a novel use of wine labels, there could be consequences if the images aren’t clear enough or the pigment fades. Color label printers can handle a large load for companies while making it easy to produce all of the necessary materials at once.
