To avoid misrepresenting their product, e-cigarette producers should use labels printed in-house that educate the consumer about their health potential and contents. There may be specific challenges involved in communicating the facts given the bias among certain demographics of users.
According to a recent HealthDay news release, researchers from Rutgers University have discovered a preference among smokers, younger ones in particular, to think that e-cigarettes pose less of a risk to users than traditional cigarettes.
The information comes from a survey of around 2,900 individuals of different ages, with particular attention given to smokers age 34 and younger. While almost 60 percent of all respondents thought e-cigarettes to be safer, the tendency to think this was even stronger among the youngest bracket of smokers, those between the ages of 18 and 25. Specifically, they said that this trend “might be associated with differences in advertising messages these groups are exposed to, the variety of flavors these different products are offered in, and in the case of e-cigarettes, possibly an inclination for younger people to attribute more positive feelings toward newer products that are seen as new and ‘techy.'”
While smoking in general has reportedly been on a steady decline over the past few years, there are still concerns over the ways electronic cigarettes are packaged and labeled. The FDA originally planned to conclude a comment period for a proposed e-cigarette labeling initiative in August, but has extended it until the end of this month.
