Reported health benefits support wine industry growth

While red wine has been known for its health benefits for some time now, scientists may have found another benefit of the “miracle molecule” resveratrol that’s in the vino.

Presented at the National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society, a group of researchers found that resveratrol could potentially aid with stability and balance in advancing age. These new findings may spell great news for the wine industry, which is already expanding.

“As consumers discover new varietals, regions and price points, overall wine consumption is expected to continue to increase over the next five years,” says Adam Rogers, senior research analyst for the Beverage Information Group. “The wine industry is predicted to reach 317.3 million cases by 2012.”

Health benefits aside, Beverage Information Group also states that total wine dollar sales have grown to $27.8 billion this past year, a 2.8 percent increase from 2010. In addition, wine consumption has also increased by 3 percent to hit 312.4 million 9-liter cases in 2011.

Furthermore, domestic wines have continued to outpace imports as the United States market perpetuates its reputation of having better value than international competitors, showing strong years for California, Oregon and Washington wines. But, the report credits the Millennial age group for its interest in lesser known varietals and interest in experimentation as aiding the imports market.

For wineries and vintners, while the industry is expanding it means that more competition may be hitting the shelves.
