Errors on dog and cat food labels have been noted before, but a report from Chapman University published this September shows a disturbing lack of possible oversight when it comes to manufacturers in this industry. Updated labels assure consumers that they are making the right choice when they turn to your product.
The report looked at more than 50 cans of meat-based pet food and found that several contained potential errors. Since pet food cans often have labels with small, hard-to-read fonts, they are perfect examples of products that need well-made labels from a color label printer.
Most of the pet food products that were suspected to be mislabeled featured meat, with the most common being chicken. Others included pork, turkey, and beef, with only one found to contain goose. A press release on the report quotes co-author Dr. Rosalee Hellberg on the importance of the study, which included testing for horsemeat.
“With the recent discovery of horsemeat in ground meat products sold for human consumption in several European countries, finding horsemeat in U.S. consumer food and pet food products is a concern, which is one of the reasons we wanted to do this study,” she said.
News source WTVM recently featured an article about the different elements of the pet food label that consumers need to consider when shopping. These include identifying key words that indicate the way the product was tested, contact information for the manufacturer and other language that denotes legitimacy.
No matter what you want to put on your labels, a printer like the Primera LX900 or Primera LX400 will help your company keep up with all of the different standards it needs to in order to do right by consumers.
