Private wine labels increase in restaurants

In March, Bloomberg reported that – due in part to a combination of warmer weather and the improving economy, the food and restaurant industry experienced record sales and increased growth compared to March of 2011. As a result, many restaurants may have started using a popular trend to help attract and maintain customers: private wine labels.

Fox Business spoke with Erin Ward, the director of Alicart Restaurant Group in New York City on April 20, about restaurants that are now designing their own custom labels for wine bottles. In this interview, Ward cited the example of an Italian restaurant called Carmine’s that the Alicart Group owns. Carmine’s not only has five different types of wines under a private label – mostly ranging the spectrum of Italian-made reds to go with the restaurant’s Italian theme – but it also provides a magnum-sized, double bottle that it oftentimes uses for parties and other large events, Ward says.

In addition to the rising popularity of private wine labels, the wine industry itself is expected to grow over the next few years, according to the Silicon Valley Bank.

“The wine world is growing at such an amazing rate,” said Ward. “Here in the United States we are drinking more wine than ever before, and soon wine will become a true staple in most households.”

Furthermore, organic, or “Green Wine,” is also on the rise according to The Huffington Post. Investing in a green wine that can be put under a private label is a great way for restaurants and wine retailers to cash in on both rising and profitable trends.
