Wine lovers are often stereotyped as snobby, inclusive folk who thrive on jargon and a series of archaic, almost nonsensical rituals. While this is of course a misconception, the appreciation of wine can seem intimidating to many. It can start with wine labels that are too ornate or difficult to understand, alienating users looking for specific information. A recent Taos News article breaks down the elements of the wine label into easy-to-understand components like name, type, alcohol content and vintage. When looked at in this fashion, the items on the label don’t seem that different from the sort of details you’d find on any other product description – as they really aren’t anything more than that. At its core, the function of a marked bottle (or, in some cases, box) of wine is to tell you what it contains. The more challenging aspects may only be difficult in that they refer to things that an amateur may be unfamiliar with, such as the names of specific estates or species of grapes. But even if these look foreign to the reader, a well-formatted label will at the very least enable them to identify them correctly and research them on their own.
There are ways to invite outsiders into a circle without being condescending. Producers can turn to the capabilities of a specialty label maker to design and execute labels that convey the desired image of a winemaker’s brand in a way that keeps customers of all kinds interested and takes advantage of placement on the bottle itself.
