According to a new survey from AutoTrader.com – an online consumer car resource – the majority of car shoppers are saying it’s important to them that the vehicle be labeled as “Made in America.” In fact, many consumers would rather purchase a foreign vehicle that was manufactured in America than an American automakers’ car that was outsourced.
“There’s no doubt that buying American products supports the U.S. economy, but ‘Made in the U.S.’ doesn’t have to mean ‘made by’ a U.S. manufacturer,” said Rick Wainschel, vice president of automotive insights at AutoTrader.com. ”
But, recent market movements have shown that this isn’t just prevalent in the automotive industry.
This trend in consumer demand for products to be labeled as “Made in America” has not fallen by the wayside for many major corporations. For example, Google’s newest smartphone, the Nexus Q, was made – mostly – in America as, according to FastCompany, many smaller and crucial parts were manufactured overseas. This was done in a response to Apple’s outsourcing controversy.
Furthermore, the major aerospace manufacturer, Airbus, is planning to build its planes in an Alabama plant, allowing them to label their massive jets as “Made in America” in an attempt to pull in more American consumers.
As many major corporations continue to increase their manufacturing operations in the United States as they seek to expand their American markets, it’s clear that the “Made in the USA” moniker contains powerful influence over American consumers.
