Government agency proposes healthier lunches at schools

As this nation as a whole changes its image in the eyes of the world, more consumers and businesses are concerned with putting forth healthy food options. Manufacturers that wish to gain a higher consumer base would be wise to invest in a Primera LX900 color label printer and develop attractive, customized food labels to put on their products and bring in customers while on the shelves of supermarkets.

Since more companies and restaurants have focused on displaying their nutrition information and offering fruit and vegetable platters, large school systems have also decided to put forth more effort in delivering quality food products to their students, according to the Associated Press. Candy, soft drinks and fatty foods may soon be off the menus at many schools, as the federal government proposes new regulations and standards for ensuring that healthy items are sold in these educational institutions.

“USDA’s proposed nutrition standards are a critical step in closing that loophole and in ensuring that our schools are places that nurture not just the minds of American children but their bodies as well,” Senator Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, told the news source.

The Agriculture Department proposed that chips, cakes, nachos and mozzarella sticks be taken out of vending machines and lunch lines and instead replaced with low-fat hamburgers, trail mix, baked chips and lower-calorie sports drinks. However, despite this victory, The Guardian reported that the government recently canceled a national survey on the nutrition content of school lunches. The Department of Education informed the Children’s Food Trust that they would not be conducting the survey this year.

Regardless of the government’s involvement, manufacturers and restaurant owners would be wise to serve healthy food. By investing in a Primera LX900 color label printer, business owners will be able to display custom labels on their products that emphasize the nutritional content.
