Food labels can cover many different questionable ingredients and types of additives, but one of the biggest concerns right now is obviously the presence of Genetically Modified Organisms, which seem to be found in a variety of things we eat.
There’s no clear consensus about how harmful these types of foods really are, but despite that, there is a movement to get them labeled. As the Kansas City Star reports, voters in Washington state will have a chance to express their support for this measure.
Labeling campaigner Scott Faber was quoted by the source explaining the simple reasons consumers might prefer this kind of labeling initiative. While it is unclear at the moment what greater use of these labels would really do for consumer goods, the support of the Evergreen State would be a decisive move for this practice and a sign that it’s truly desired by consumers.
“We’re living in an era where people want to know more about their food than ever before,” Faber said. “They want to know who made it, how it was made, where it was made.”
However, a recent NPR piece examines both the reasons for and against GMO labeling in the context of what might actually happen. It’s clear that if these do become mandatory, food companies need to consider the space on their food labels carefully and delegate it judiciously.
This can be more difficult than it sounds, but a color label printer offers the chance to tailor them to federal standards and your own opinions of what you want.
