David Lynch, the critically acclaimed director of Eraserhead (1977), Blue Velvet (1986) Mulholland Drive (2001) and creator of the TV series Twin Peaks (1992), released a custom label design for a few of the famed champagne and wine company Dom Perignon’s vintages called The Power of Creation. The product line was launched on July 23 in Los Angeles.
Lynch – who was a painter before he became a filmmaker – told Decanter.com that the designs are “a process of tuning in and then through experimentation getting something that expresses the essential nature.”
The labels are shiny and metallic, a proud shield on the bottle’s face. Grape vines snake their way up and down the bottom half, joining in the center point below the alcohol volume and a star. In the middle is the vintage, company and champagne notification in a cursive script with the classically designed Dom Perignon logo at the top of the label, filling in the three points at the top of the shield. The 2002 vintage custom labels come in gold and the 2000 rose vintage comes in a metallic purple.
The designs follow an advertising campaign Lynch made for Dom Perignon last December. Lynch has also designed labels for Dom Perignon’s 1998 rose vintage.
While most companies may not be able to afford such a world renowned artist and filmmaker as David Lynch, that does not mean they can’t design their own custom labels that help them stand out from the rest of the market and create an identity for the brand.
If other wineries or businesses are looking to invest in better custom labels, they may want to use a Primera LX900 series color label printer to get the job done.
