Drew Barrymore starts own wine, uses family crest on label

Most celebrities will invest their wealth into other companies, usually ones that produce items they enjoy. As such – and reported by this blog – many famous artists will create their own wine labels. The newest of these is actress Drew Barrymore, who, in May, announced her partnership with vino distributor Wilson Daniels on her own wine label.

Barrymore Pinot Grigio is a wine based out of northern Italy that has been cited as being “crisp and fruity” and has already won the Le Challenge International du Vin Award. But, while the quality and the actress’s brand may be great selling points, the wine’s label was designed by Shepard Fairey, the graphic designer who made the iconic “Hope” posters from President Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in 2008.

“We took painstaking measures to make a label that felt fun and effortless and modern but also includes tradition, and we got to work with Shepard Fairey on a crest of my grandfather’s,” said the actress about her wine’s label to the Angeleno.

The bottle’s label has a slightly off white background adorned with her grandfather’s crest consisting of a calligraphic “B” in the center of a simple crest. Above the crest, “Barrymore” spreads out across the top in a soft arch. Below it, in a shiny golden font is “pinot grigio” and “Delle Venezie” as well as the bottle’s year and two delicate branches, presumably from a grape vine.

Although other wineries or vineyards may not get the chance to work with Shepard Fairey to design their own custom labels, that does not mean they, too, can’t produce quality labels that pop off the shelves.
