America’s love for beer is unmistakable. National Public Radio (NPR) explained in a recent article that while two companies dominate the market – Anheuser-Busch InBev and MillerCoors account for 90 percent of domestic production – craft beer companies are gaining popularity.
“I try to have a nice mix of approachable craft beers, as well as exciting new stuff for people who have tried a lot of everyday beers,” Sam Fitz, the beer director for Meridian Pint, a Washington, D.C.-based restaurant, told the news source.
He added that he prides himself on being able to offer a handpicked selection, including brands like DC Brau, Flying Dog and Oxbow. However, Fitz said that there are certain labels that he will not carry – namely any beer that falls under Miller, Coors or Bud labels.
Even though the craft beers tend to be more expensive, Fitz said he is trying to offer the highest-quality products that he can. He wants to buy from producers that use good ingredients and are innovative producers.
Sometimes, the major company of a particular beer is not always clear. According to Elizabeth Flock, a journalist who has covered news about major beer companies, many individuals think that Blue Moon is a craft beer. However, it is owned by MillerCoors.
That is why Julia Herz, the craft beer program director for the Brewers Association, wants big beer to print its name on the labels. She explained to NPR that there needs to be a transparency of parent company ownership, so beer lovers have a chance to know who is behind certain brands.
