Every region has its own aesthetic taste, a developed sense of culture that is often prevalent in everything from the artwork to the custom label designs on the products sold and produced there. With such a heavy cultural influence on respecting tradition, it makes sense that, according to Wine Intelligence, the predominant wine label the burgeoning Chinese market prefers is a classical one.
According to the report, the number one need from Chinese wine drinkers is reassurance, something that is often correlated with the demographic’s perceptions of how sophisticated or traditional the wine label looks. The more modern or “funky” looking the more skeptical the consumers become.
But, the “Elegant Contemporary” design is making headway with the crowd, a type of design that incorporates traditional uses of lines and landscapes with more white space and contemporary fonts.
“The key thing to understand about wine labeling in China is the importance of the initial visual impression. This is a culture that is close tuned to visual symbols, and in any case the wording on the front label is often unintelligible to all but the most sophisticated wine consumer,” said Jenny Li, the report’s author. “To succeed in China, brand owners will need to understand very clearly the visual impression that their wine gives through its label design, and use that information to build their brand story more effectively.”
It’s clear that if any vintners wish to expand their lines into China they may need to customize their labels to fit the preferences of the Chinese market. By using a Primera LX400 series color label printer to create wine labels that are more visually striking and express the winery’s storey in a clear and unique way, vintners will be sure to an increase in sales for the region.
