3 tips for cannabis labeling

September 19, 2018 by OptimediaLabs

cannabis labeling

As you’re looking to create label designs for your cannabis business, it’s important to stand out in the ever-growing market. Plus, there are many regulations that govern what your label can and can’t say.

Here’s a look at three suggestions when navigating label creation for this fairly new industry.

1. Know the requirements for your state

There are currently 30 states in the U.S. that have legalized the use of medical marijuana. Nine states have legalized recreational marijuana. By 2027, the worldwide cannabis market is expected to reach $57 billion.

With the continuing increase in these products, it’s important to understand your state’s regulations on cannabis labels. There are certain warnings and specific information that need to be included on labels.

Let’s look at California’s legal requirements as an example. The California Department of Public Health requires that each label for cannabis products:

  • Display the information in a clear and legible manner.
  • Ensure all label information is on the outer layer of packaging.
  • Use English and at least a six-point font.
  • Show THC and CBD content (in milligrams).
  • Include California’s universal symbol for cannabis in black.
  • Not be attractive to children.
  • Include a list of ingredients.

There may also be requirements related to Proposition 65 in your state, which involves health warnings, such as birth defect risks. Make sure you check your state’s laws around these issues so you don’t face legal challenges with your labels down the road.

2. Create a professional, not stereotypical, design

Gone are the days when cannabis use was only connected with hippies or college kids in the media. The “pothead” persona is no longer acceptable to serious cannabis companies, whether strictly medical or both medical and recreational.

While this may go without saying, you need a design that looks professional and doesn’t harken back to these stereotypes, as Ad Age recommended. Your business won’t be taken seriously if your label doesn’t convey an elevated design sensibility.

3. Be adaptable

This is still a fairly new industry. You’ll likely need to alter something about your label in the next few years, so be open to change. As more states start to legalize recreational use of cannabis, more guidelines could be introduced for every state.

Stay informed about what’s going on in the industry and be prepared to respond with your product labels and even your overall logo. Never risk skipping a new guideline or requirement for the sake of design.

When it’s time to revise your products’ labels and get them in line with rules and expectations, check out label printers at Optimedia Labs’ U.S. page or Canadian site.
