Alcohol producers in the United States are not currently required to include nutrition labels on their beverages but this practice could become popular in the face of a trend spearheaded by the beverage company Diageo. Diageo owns several internationally well-known alcohol brands, like Smirnoff, Guinness and Captain Morgan, and sources suggest that this global leader could influence opinions on how nutritional information is displayed.
The Wall Street Journal says that this pattern would follow a similar health emphasis among food manufacturers to meet consumer need for more health details on products. The labels could be seen in American markets soon, and also come at a time when a consortium of European brewers are considering similar labeling measures for alcohol products.
In a press release, Diageo North America’s President of Marketing and Innovation, Peter McDonough, said that including nutritional information on their labels reflects the company’s values.
“The consumer is at the heart of everything we do, and making serving facts information available to people in an easy to understand format is what, according to our research and polling, today’s consumers want,” he said. “As a company that prides itself in promoting responsible consumption, we believe this information will help consumers make informed and responsible decisions about drinking.”
