General Mills puts comic books in cereal boxes

One of the old-school means of marketing to consumers of breakfast cereal is the classic “prize inside” strategy. Amidst the other colorful imagery on the box, major cereal brands usually promote these extra treats through a special graphic that indicates what can be expected inside.

Products designed and manufactured by smaller companies might not have the same resources, but their creators can still design custom labels that allow for this kind of promotion.

In a recently published press release, General Mills announced that it will be utilizing the most recent version of this kind of campaign in some of its cereal products by placing DC comic books inside certain packages.

The four separate issues of Justice League comics that are included are reportedly produced to tie into other superhero-themed packaging elements, and also to refer comic fans to further supplementary materials that can be found online.

“We’re excited for people young and old to discover these comic books in their favorite cereals, giving them a strong, confident start to the day,” the release quoted Lisa Tomassen, General Mills’ communications manager, as saying.

It’s a good move for the audiences who might share both of these interests, as well as a strong means of converting kids into fans of these comics franchises. It also could be seen as a way to remind adults of when these campaigns were more common. As Business Insider recently noted, long-standing brands may change over the years while still holding the same sway over the adults who used to be fans.
