Whole Foods Market begins take home wine program with its own label

The Whole Foods Market in Austin, Texas has been a leader in many things since its inception,  from championing organic groceries to providing local farmer support. But, one thing the grocer has that most don’t is a wine bar known as Bar Lamar.

According to the Austin CultureMap, Whole Foods’ Bar Lamar has taken the next step in providing convenience to customers by creating a “wine-to-go” program. Customers can now use their choice of a 32 or 64 ounce bottle adorned with a custom label that says “Old Schooler” to fill up with their favorite wine. The wine label stems from traditions normally seen in countries such as Spain, Italy or Argentina where consumers will bring their own jugs to a local winery to fill up and take back home.

“Now you have a way to maintain your wine consumption, get better value and reduce your impact,” said Charles Bieler to the news source, whose wine The Gotham Project has been featured on the grocer’s tap many times.

The Old Schooler labels are customized with a turn of the century typography and aesthetic that provides the nostalgia often prevalent when associating with the European cultures the practice stems from.

Although some customers may be reluctant to commit themselves to purchasing an entire growler of wine with a fancy label, they can test run these wines with just a glass if they would like.

If other grocers or food retailers wish to provide the same convenience for customers, they may want to consider designing a custom label for their take home wine program as well. The use of a Primera LX900 color label printer can provide the printing necessities for this kind of operation.
