What are the benefits of organic food?

Food manufacturers, shop owners and farmers provide a quality service to the people of this country and, today, those partaking in a healthy lifestyle often choose to purchase organic foods.

Those who seek to appease consumers interested in organic products will need to develop farming methods that are not conventional, such as applying natural fertilizers and rotating crops or using mulch to manage weeds, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Standard farming methods use chemical fertilizers, synthetic spray insecticides, herbicides and animal antibiotics to keep all cows, pigs and sheep free from disease. When business owners and farmers decide to produce organic food, they can make consumers aware of this information by making labels that stand out.

However, such food labels must be approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) organic certification program. These regulations focus on the handling, processing and growth of the produce.

Any products that bear the USDA organic label are processed according to the federal agency’s standards. Also, products made with at least 70 percent of organic materials are allowed to include food labels that say “made with organic ingredients.”

While there may be many benefits for those choosing to eat organic foods, reporter John Block wrote for the Wall Street Journal that there are various important reasons for new ways of farming.

“Preindustrial yields were low and stagnant before the introduction of machines, fertilizers, plant and animal breeding, pesticides and genetic engineering,” Block wrote. “Americans are no longer limited to a small variety of local and seasonal food … Modern agriculture is simply more productive, providing more variety at better prices.”
