A new Senate bill in Washington state is set to impact e-cigarette production there. As the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported, SB 6328 now awaits approval from the governor: among other precautionary measures, this legislation would call for e-cigarette labels on these items, similar to those on traditional cigarettes and other products not meant for child use. The document also includes provisions for “signage requirements” for warning minors away from “vaping” products, as well as packaging issues.
The PI article noted that the restrictions would apply to online sellers as well, and include displays that prevent minors from accessing vapor devices. The manufacturer would also require companies to reveal the nicotine content of their products, something that users may have misconceptions about.
A press release from the office of the state Attorney General, Bob Ferguson, stated that the bill is “expected to be signed into law.” The state would also be able to monitor e-cigarette sales under this law, due to the licensing system it would establish.
In the statement, Ferguson affirmed the importance of this bill, given the current lack of regulation. “This bill is an important step in protecting our kids from a largely unregulated industry,” he said. “By increasing enforcement and labeling requirements, we increase public safety and empower consumers to make informed decisions on what they consume.”
