Using labels as a warning method: What can and can’t be done

While the federal government may be able to determine how it can warn individuals about the dangers of smoking to a certain extent, an appeals court in New York City has ruled that Mayor Bloomberg can not try to scare smokers by requiring the stores that sell cigarettes to display grotesque images similar to the ones that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tried to put on the sides of the products’ labels.

The FDA’s controversial request to have tobacco companies display the similar images was struck down by United States District Court Judge Richard Leon earlier this year, but it is still a serious duty taken by the federal government to warn consumers about the dangers of certain products with custom labels .

But sometimes private companies will take it upon themselves to do this. For example, the South Korean brewery Hite-Jinro has introduced a custom label on its bottles that advise consumers to not let alcoholic consumption lead to violence, according to the Guardian.

“We felt tremendously responsible for social problems caused by drinking and will help efforts to change our drinking culture to a more positive one,” said sales manager Hite-Jiniro to the Chosun Ilbo newspaper.

With products such as alcohol, tobacco and firearms that have the potential to alter human behavior, it can be incredibly important that companies do what they can to promote the safety of their consumers – both for legal and business reasons.

If other breweries, wineries or tobacco shops wish to inform consumers of some of the hazards that may be associated with using their product, using a color label printer to design these custom labels can be an effective and affordable way to do this.
