Even though we've seen parades of "mashup foods" that combine unlikely items together, the trend is still a hot one. Because a lot of the fun stems from coming up with a unique name for a new food, companies looking to be innovative should use label printers to make custom-tailored packaging.
A special infographic from Co.Design that recently appeared on Fast Company should start the creative juices flowing for anyone who needs a refresher course on what mashup food is all about. It's set up as a wheel surrounded by different ingredients: Moving the mouse over them shows the other foods they've matched up with to create meme-ready snacks. Oftentimes, this produces a memorable and funny name.
For example, highlight either the sushi or the burrito and you'll see the "sushirito." Pizza and a cinnamon bun create the "pizzabon," a brownie and a cookie make a "brookie," and of course, croissants and donuts add up to "cronuts," which caused a sensation when they were introduced last year. Some of the products featured, however, have less catchy names. A treat that puts ice cream between two pop tarts is simply called "pop tart ice cream sandwich."
Major chains also stand to benefit from this approach. In addition to Taco Bell's recent announcement of the Doritos Locos Taco, the restaurant is also reportedly working on chicken tacos in which the meat is fried in tortilla chips. The Consumerist said that this offering is similar to one that KFC restaurants in the Phillipines already offer.
Whatever novel food your business is getting ready to market, you can give it the exposure it deserves with specially crafted adhesive labels.
