Food labels that are wrongly designed and applied may reflect badly on several entities involved in distribution and production of goods, not just a single company or provider. Because this can upset the entire relationship your company is looking to sustain between itself and the consumer, producers should be mindful of the ways that bad labeling can leave them in trouble.
This can happen across cultures, as recently seen in a story covered by AFP on a series of establishments in the country of Japan that are suffering due to the unethical practices of food maker Takashimaya Co., which featured shrimp products that were falsely described on menus and packages as another, more expensive shrimp, as well as other meat products that were processed without being correctly labeled as such.
In the Japan Times, an executive from the company named Yutaka Masuyama apologized for this mistake along with other members of the company. But what about the individual locations that sold these dishes under the wrong names or thought they were getting one thing when they got another?
“It slipped their mind,” Masuyama said. “The price tag was lowered, and there was no intention on our part to make extra money out of this.”
Although it may seem like a relatively small infraction to confuse different types of shrimp, the effect observed by the customer and the immediate financial repercussions need to be taken extremely seriously in order to put a premium on high functioning service.
