FDA proposes new rulings for food safety

Farmers and food manufacturers have a duty to their consumers to ensure that the products they sell are safe and beneficial.

Soon they will be held accountable for keeping their produce free of pathogens, as officials from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have recently proposed new food safety rules which will require meat, vegetable and fruit producers to reduce foodborne illness known to cause sickness in many Americans every year, according to Reuters. The rulings will follow the Food Safety Modernization Act signed into law two years ago.

“These proposed regulations are a sign of progress,” Caroline Smith DeWaal, food safety director at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, told the news source. “The new law should transform the FDA from an agency that tracks down outbreaks after the fact to an agency focused on preventing food contamination in the first place.”

These new regulations should be helpful in avoiding serious conditions, such as salmonella, E. coli or listeria, from the U.S. population. Different, more advanced standards will be useful in preventing “food safety problems” and illness, said Michael Taylor, FDA deputy commissioner for foods and veterinary medicine.

Food manufacturers will now have to develop solid plans for ensuring the safety of their products.
