Consumer’s perception of healthy eating changing

Business owners seeking to find quality and healthy food to serve at their restaurants will need to pay attention to consumers along with the manufacturers they are working with, as the trends of healthy eating are constantly changing, with some focusing on organic produce while others search mostly for locally-grown products.

A survey released from the consulting company Technomic shows that consumers are also focused on a well-balanced diet that allows them the occasional indulgence along with healthy foods, according to a company press release.

Currently, 64 percent of consumers have said that its important to have a healthy diet and pay attention to the nutrition found on food labels. Also, 50 percent of those surveyed said that they would prefer if restaurants served more healthy options. Businesses that are selling their produce to restaurants would benefit from making labels that emphasize the nutritious aspects of their food.

“More consumers than ever before tell us that eating healthy and paying attention to nutrition is important,” Darren Tristano, vice president of Technomic, said in the press release. “However, there’s a shift happening in terms of what actually defines healthy for them. We’re seeing more consumers gravitate toward health-halo claims – such as local, natural and organic, as well as whole-wheat and free-range. Operators can leverage this growing interest in the health halo by developing the kinds of menu offerings that can underscore health.”
