The fact that legislation surrounding food labels differ from state to state is well-known. But user interest might also be just as variable, and should be taken into consideration as your company searches for label printers.
A survey that was recently cited in an article for The Des Moines Register references the degree to which citizens of Iowa actually care about proper labeling of different food-related qualities. These include whether or not the items are sustainable, and whether they were produced in the United States.
For most of the categories examined, fewer than 40 percent of respondents expressed an interest in applicable labels. Just 18 percent cared about GMO labels in and a mere 13 percent were concerned with gluten content.
Some states, like Vermont, where GMO labels have been approved and made mandatory, are notably passionate about their inclusion, but Iowans seem to be more on the fence. The Register quoted Laurie Johns of the Iowa Farm Bureau, who conducted the study, to determine the current mindset is surrounding GMO labels within the state.
“Although there’s no push in Iowa to label GMOs, it is happening in other states,” she said. “There’s a lot of confusion when it comes to GMO crops.”
Acknowledging GMOs and treating the products that contain them with the kind of attention that consumers and government officials want can be necessary for compliance with the law. It can also lead to an increase of sale,s but only if they reflect reality.
All the same, it’s a good idea for companies to know exactly which labels have the most support and interest, so as not to waste valuable resources.
